Refreshed Medical Classification System (MCS)
For pre-enlistees enlisting from October 2027 onwards
Changes under the Refreshed Medical Classification System
If you are enlisting from October 2027 onwards, you will no longer receive a PES status informing you of your medical fitness for National Service (NS). You will undergo medical screening from end-June 2026 onwards and instead receive three sets of information on your medical fitness:
1. Whether you are Medically Fit or Unfit for Service
Medically Fit for Service indicates that you are medically fit to serve NS and will be enlisted.
Medically Unfit for Service indicates that you are medically unfit to serve NS and will be exempted from NS.
2. Your medical exemptions
You will receive specific medical exemptions, if any, based on your medical condition(s). These medical exemptions will determine your eligibility for activities and vocations during NS.
3. Your eligibility for 8-week reduction in full-time NS duration
Your eligibility for an 8-week reduction in full-time NS is based on your medical fitness. You will be informed of your eligibility when receiving your medical screening results.
You will only be granted an 8-week reduction in full-time NS duration if you attain 61 points or more from the three Pre-Enlistee Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) stations (with a minimum of 1 point from each station).
You may view your medical fitness results, including your medical exemptions, via OneNS.
What are medical exemptions?
Medical exemptions are issued by the Medical Officers (MOs) to indicate that servicemen are not eligible to participate in specific activities due to medical reasons.
Under the refreshed medical classification system, your eligibility for activities during NS and vocations, will be determined by a standardised list of activity-specific medical exemptions. You will only be deployed to vocations you are medically assessed to be suitable for. As part of your medical screening results, you will be able to view your medical exemptions, if any, on OneNS.
Enabling wider deployment during National Service
The refreshed MCS will be more precise as pre-enlistees will receive specific medical exemptions based on their medical conditions(s), instead of a broad PES status. The infographic shows how servicemen with different medical conditions may now be eligible for more activities and vocations under the refreshed MCS, enabling them to contribute more meaningfully during their National Service (NS).

Safety will remain a priority
Safety remains a key priority for all training in the SAF, SCDF and SPF. There will be guidelines for commanders and trainers on what National Servicemen (NSFs) with different medical exemptions can or cannot do during training. Commanders and trainers will be able to generate a pre-verified list of NSFs who are medically eligible to participate in the training activities.
You can be enlisted for National Service in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) or Singapore Police Force (SPF). The type of basic training you will be assigned to depends on your medical fitness and Pre-Enlistee Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) results.
